Math teacher, Ms.Hu decided to take up computer science

The Full Story

This page is where I will look back in time to reflect on the educational goals I had when I entered the Master of Arts in Education Technology (MAET) program that I am pursuing at Michigan State University and how those goals have changed. I will also reflect on how the program has helped me achieve those goals.

Before I discuss these exciting objectives, I would want to discuss the path that I went through prior to deciding to enroll in the program. When I was working as an intern in my mentor's classroom, I noticed that one of my mentor, Mr. Coty's class projects involved letting students use Scratch to present triangle exterior theorem. At the same time, he introduced computer science concepts such as repetition and generalization to the students.

When I saw it, my first thought was, "Wow, it is really fantastic! In the future, I hope to have the opportunity to work as an educator and incorporate similar activities." Because of this, I have decided to enroll in the program to learn more educational technology like this! 

Program Goals

1.     Obtain a G.C. in K–12 computer science education so that I can develop and use my own digital tools.

​

When I enrolled in the MAET  program, my first objectives were to earn a graduate certificate in K-12 Computer Science Education. As an undergraduate student majoring in mathematics education, I spent the previous four years developing various math teaching resources. Online, there are many intriguing tasks that are free to use. However, in order to independently implement more incredible tools like the triangle exterior angle project and spread the "Wow moment," I really needed background in computer science. Since joining the program, I've developed many useful abilities that will enable me to lead a class project in my classroom and create a variety of tools using Scratch, JavaScript, Java, and GeoGebra Coding. I received my Graduate Certificate in June 2022, and my Ultimate Computer Science (CS) lesson plan  illustrates the fundamental programming skills required to start an independent CS project—I think I've mastered the problem-solving strategies of tinkering, troubleshooting, debugging, and "Googling." :) Although I have completed this certificate, my goal has changed, in addition to the projects I've already completed for class , my current objective related to this G.C. is to develop at least one new CS project for my own classroom each school year because I think I must continue to use these invaluable skills to avoid forgetting everything.

2.    Find "the ultimate" solution for my students to survive remote learning years.

Because my internship ended at the start of the COVID pandemic, I would be thrust into uncharted territory in my first year of teaching, facing problems that have never been encountered before. How can I best teach my distant learners? During my time as a college student, one of my favorite ways to supplement my knowledge was to watch math lectures on YouTube. I was curious to see if the flipped classroom model is effective and decide whether or not to implement it in my own classroom. So, I've done the work of describing, reviewing, and designing my own educational research on the flipped classroom model, and then applying it in my own classroom. As a result, I was able to develop a video curriculum, and my students are enthusiastic about it. Since I still haven't proven that this solution is the best possible one, even though I have shown that it is effective, I consider my search for "the ultimate" solution to be ongoing. My current objective hasn't changed much, now is on discovering the best in-person teaching method for my students.
