Social Learning Learning with Tools Vygotsky / Observational learning/Technology as Tools
In unit 4, I have explored some Vygotsky’s Ideas, and I tried to make connections with Piaget. According to Cherry(2000), Vygotsky stressed the important role that culture plays, suggesting cultural differences can have a dramatic effect on development. Piaget’s theory suggests that development is largely universal.

I made my connection as a learner in my personal life. When I came to United States, many people asked me how large American Education is different from Chinese. I brainstormed differences of education because of cultural backgrounds. For example, I believe American education and culture focus a lot on critical thinking, so large amount of people know how to reason rationally, logically and clearly. In contrast Chinese culture did less emphasis on daring to challenge, but the culture developed more on the importance of preserving traditional culture.

Thinking about the similarities of human development, although people on earth are individual human beings in totally different background, I can see how humanity are identical behind totally different cultures. We all smile when we see an adorable fluffy cat.🐱
The biggest take-away from this Unit is how a digital and non-digital tool can change a learner’s learning. We also discussed this in our Zoom meeting. In modern days, a lot of tools help students be better learners, we try everything to make a lesson “less traditional” and more interactively engaging, but the fact is we did insufficient on papers. All of my teaching materials are all digitally on google classroom because of remote learning, and students need more practice on paper. For example, more character writing, more essay writing on paper than typing. The first thing we went back from the remote classroom is I made a lot of traditional paper worksheets and let students participate in small groups (than breakout room!)
